Details: A lost art-form, love tokens have been made from coins for centuries. The commoner's engagement ring, a man would scrimp and save for the best coin he could afford (typically a silver dime), sand down one side and then etch his lover's name on the blank half. Presented to his betrothed, she would wear it as jewelry or sew it to the inner lining of her bodice, close to her heart.

Most love tokens have long since been lost or melted down during various wars and economic downturns... detailed well-done examples are even more unique. This exceedingly rare matching set was commissioned as a Victorian "push present" - a gift to a wife for the birth of their (probably first) child. Etched by the same artist's hand.

"Mother" engraved on the reverse of an 1861 Seated Liberty Silver Dime - 15mm
"Baby" engraved on the reverse of an 1877 Seated Liberty Silver Dime - 18mm

A neat aside, note the difference in coin sizes! This is because during 1861 to 1865, the American Civil War required less silver to be minted into coins and more reserved for military use! Isn't history grand...

The perfect gift for any mother, this petite charm hangs from a delicate yet durable sterling cable chain with spring ring clasp.

*This is a sterling silver cast replica of a one-of-a-kind original set from the 1860's to 1870's - an important part of accessory history, it an early example of personalized charms and engagement jewelry for the non-noble class.
